I have received the following email from Roger Booth about teaching ringing to year 6 pupils. He writes…
“…If there any members of the UL who would be willing to help next Wednesday afternoon, or the following six Thursdays, or on 4th July, please ask them to get in touch. Any support will be warmly welcomed and we can assist with travelling expenses, and other inducements, if necessary…”
If anyone has any free time to attend any of these sessions please email him direct: or phone: 07411 181583.
Following the discussion about ‘Change Ringing for the Future’ at Hull, members of the UL may be interested in learning about and possibly helping with our St James’ School bell ringing project. This is based on a model developed at Fenstanton near Cambridge where a group of year 6 pupils were given a programme of intensive lessons and rang for a school service at the end of term.
At St James’ we have eight pupils from year 6 who would like to learn to ring. We are starting next Wednesday 10th June by taking them to St Mary’s Rotherhithe between about 1.45 and 3.15 to show them the bells and demonstrate ringing. We should also be able to give each one a short handling lesson on the front 4 bells, providing I can find enough teachers. Thereafter we will teach them at St James’ Bermondsey, between 1.30 and 3.30 on Thursday afternoons, up to and including 16th July. The plan is to have them ringing rounds, one to two at a time, with some experienced ringers for the leavers service at 9.30am on Friday 17th July. Thereafter we hope that they will join the local band and continue to learn with us.
We will also be taking the Charmborough Ring to Bermondsey Carnival in Southwark Park on Saturday 4th July http://bermondseysquare.net/bermondsey-carnival-2015-line-up/ This will this be an ideal opportunity for the young ringers to practice ringing rounds on a very easy ring of bells and we will be giving the young ringers some additional practice from around 11.00am, before the Carnival opens to the public at 12 Noon.
If there any members of the UL who would be willing to help next Wednesday afternoon, or the following six Thursdays, or on 4th July, please ask them to get in touch. Any support will be warmly welcomed and we can assist with travelling expenses, and other inducements, if necessary.
