2012 Update

The website has now gone totally WordPress!

The ULSCR website has taken on many forms and styles over the years – the below images demonstrate few key changes that stood out (2004 onwards). Key recent additions, apart from the obvious layout/design, are the galleries, history, FAQs, upcoming events (& content management system), event reports, tower locations, library, dictionary and blog.

Mod-Rewrite: this is a slightly geeky but very useful “add-on” to the UL website. This allows the usage of user-friendly URLs such as: www.ulscr.org.uk/history/website. Doing this means that Google can read our content more easily and rank us accordingly. This made the site so successful that recently if you searched “London university society”, the UL site ranked in the top 5 search results. Also, if you searched the term “ringing”, the UL site appeared twice in the top 10 results. Having user-friendly URLs makes it easier for visters to navigate our site.

Future proofing: There are many developments in mind for the future. Obvious Projects that spring to mind involve converting the event reports and galleries section into a more user friendly content management system. Instead of having to manually enter data into a database it should have an online login facility to enter information such as the number of photos in an album, whether a report is ready for viewing or even if there is an album that links to a report. These developments means more members of the society can take responsibility for what appears on their website and will ultimately aid my successor in the upkeep of content and ensuring dates/reports are up-to-date.

Website purpose: The website is for the benefit of current students to update their calendars, view photos, catch up on the blog, refer to the constitution(!) and for new members to get an idea of what we are about. As always, comments, additions & suggestions are very welcome. If you see something that is missing, out-of-date, wrong… anything else you can think of, then please email the webmaster.
